In the short time since its adoption, multichannel, particularly stereo, sound has become a major factor in television production, broadcasting, and reception in the United States. The technical aspects of the BTSC multichannel television sound system are explained, and it is described how it has been accepted among producers, distributors, and consumers of U.S. television programming. Further offered are some reasons why the time was ripe for the acceptance of stereo sound by the U.S. television industry and the viewing public. Finally, the effects of these stereo and high-fidelity trends on television equipment design are discussed.
