The theory of shadowless calculation of ear signals is shown to have accumulated a number of misconceptions over the yárs since 1920. Present-day spectral stereo theory follows directly from ear-signal calculations using the shadowing (diffraction) functions specified by Rayleigh. The ahsdowless theory, properly understood, is the low-frequency asymptotic version. A few results of spectral theory are shown. It departs from the shadowless theory for higher frequencies, beginning at about 440 Hz. Some prevalent notions are overturned.
