A complementary audio signal encoding and decoding format, called spectral recording (SR), for use in professional magnetic recording and similar applications is described. The processing algorithm is highly responsive to the spectral properties of the signal. A further characteristic used by endoding deemphasizes high-level signal components in the frequency regions usually subject to channel overload. The process results in a significant reduction of audible noise and distortion arising in the channel.
