Conflicting recommendations and assertions about arrangements suitable for stereo have been made. On the basis of previous work, experiments were planned which yielded information showing the dependence of the over-all illusion on a variety of factors, some at the program source and others at the playback end. The conclusion is reached that stereo must be considered as an integral system, to be optimized according to individual circumstances, and that such a perspective view rationalizes earlier apparent differences.
