Digital audio technology has reached the level where it is now reasonable to imagine combining many different functions into a single, programmable station. Such a station has been build and tested in a variety of settings, such as film sound editing, multitrack recording and mixing, noise reduction, special-effects processing (such as reverberation and pitch shifting), music synthesis, and many others. The advantage of such a station is that any new effort or process or signal routing can be added simply by programming, rather than by rewiring. The console itslef is entirely "soft," in that the very meaning of each knob, button, and slider is assigned entirely by the software. This allows the operator to "tailor" the controls to the task and to specific preferences. With current digital technology, this can all be accomplished with no penalty in speed, cost, or performance.
