Numerical Optimization of the Crossover Filters in a Multiway Loudspeaker System

A discrete nonlinear optimization method is described for the optimum design of the crossover filters of a multiway loudspeaker system. The optimization method has been implemented in a digital computer program to enable a fast and flexible design of the crossover filters. The program requires the input of measured sound pressure response, sound power response, and input impedance of each individual driver. Furthermore the method accounts for nonlinear constraints such as the power-handling capacity of the individual drivers, the minimum impedance of the total system, and the discrete series of filter component values. The result is a set of optimum component values, which are ready for use in a practical environment.
