Details are presented of the apt-X100 16-bit to 4-bit digital audio compression algorithm for real-time transmission of very high quality audio at 128kbits/s. Designed to directly replace digital PCM hi-fi audio links, apt-X100 is implemented on a single masked-ROM DSP and boasts exceptional tolerance to bit errors, low coding delay, zero-overhead automatic data synchronization and de-multiplexing, and an auxiliary data transmission facility. A complete half-duplex dual-channel encode/decode implementation within a single DSP is also reported.
