This paper describes the psychoacoustical principles of the bit-efficient audio encoding technique. The starting points and the process followed to reach the present DCC-audio-like sound quality are explained. The system is compared to other known data-rate reducing audio encoding techniques. Potential applications other than DCC are discussed.
