Hierarchical Transmission System for Multispeaker Stereo

A matrix method is described for encoding and decoding n-speaker stereo to and from transmission channels suitable for broadcasting and recording applications. The transmission signals for different numbers n of speakers are mutually compatible such that listeners receiving n1-speaker stereo transmissions via n2 loudspeakers will obtain psychoacousticaly optimal results. This allows frontal-stage stereo signals originated for different numbers of loudspeakers to be mixed together freely, simplyfying the operational aspects of multispeaker stereo and HDTV stereo systems. Such hierarchial transmission systems are based on psychoacoustic decoders given in the companion paper Optimum Reproduction Matrices for Multispeaker Stereo.
