Ferrofluid as an Acoustical Design Parameter

When ferrofluid is incorporated into the voice coil gap of a dynamic speaker, the acoustical parameters such as the mechanical damping factor. (Qm), harmonic distortion and heat transfer can be modified. This paper describes how various properties of a ferrofluid such as the magnetization, viscosity and quantity affect acoustical performance. The volatility of ferrofluid and its impact on speaker behavior was also investigated. The study is conducted on three types of drivers: tweeter, midrange and woofer and provides a valuable design guide.
