Measuring a Dummy Head in Search of Pinna Cues

Head-Related transfer functions may show deep notches that are due to strong reflections from the helix and concha of the pinna. Source elevation was found to be cued by the left slope of the notch between 6 and 11kHz. Ambiguities in this cue are resolved by a secondary notch or peak. The way the information is encoded suggests processing by feature detectors. The experimental results support and extend Blauert`s theory of directional bands.
