Correction of Focalization Phenomena of the Opéra Comique Coupola

The concave ceiling of the Opéra-Comique (also called Salle Favart) in Paris, is typical of many 19th century theaters. It results in a strong focalization above the audience, mostly at the balcony. The phenomenon has been analyzed using a TDS technique and has been modelled with the `SoundBase` hall simulation computer programme, a convex transparent element, which would not hide the Benjamin Constant classified painting. The effect of this acoustic `lentil` is to diffuse the impinging sound and, thus, to reduce the focalization effect. The results of the modelization and of the objective measurements are presented.
