Traditionally, test signals for audio systems have been based on pure tones. From a psychoacoustic viewpoint this may have advantages since it makes it possible to obtain a rough estimate of distortion by simple listening. However, from a technical viewpoint pure tones are inefficient in connection with digital audio systems. This is discussed and proposals are made for test signals revealing large signal non-linearities as well as test signals revealing small signal non-linearities.
