Toward a Truly Integrated Digital Audio Environment

What capabilities must an audio workstation have to be truly stand-alone, productive tool in the post-production environment? Many current workstations address only a handful of post-production needs and provide only small improvement on traditional techniques. An examination of current ideas in video workstations, both off-line and on-line, can shed some light on why these ideas have gained such wide-spread acceptance in the video industry. The more successful ones achieve a rare integration of function and comfort. How can some of these ideas translate to an aurally oriented environment? To achieve the complete and long overdue integration of the digital audio post environment we must see the evolution of a radically different, yet comfortable visually oriented control surface that can effectively bridge the most efficient aspects of traditional techniques with the technologies of today and the future.
