An integrated-circuit version of the Dolby Pro-Logic surround-sound system is presented. The IC described is the most complete analog implementation to date of Pro-Logic on a chip, and contains all of the core functions for Pro-Logic including autobalance, noise generation, the active decoding matrix and center channel mode control. The chip is capable of three or four channel decoding mode, and provides a bypass for normal stereo. All modes are controlled by a parallel digital interface which is TTL or CMOS compatible. The chip contains thirty op amps, ten low-noise VCA`s, a new circuit element called an operational conveyor amplifier, two dual-output rectifiers, two log-difference amplifiers, comparators, random logic and a digital noise source. It is implemented on an advanced BiCMOS process with complementary MOS and bipolar transistors, oxide capacitors and laser-trimmable thin-film resistors. The IC contains approximately 2000 devices and utilizes 54,000mil squared of area.
