This paper presents a method for calculating the sound field in reverberant rooms at low frequencies. The theory uses transfer impedances derived from the Green`s function solution of the wave equation. A modification of these solution functions, by including the direct source term explicitly, allows for calculation on a small minicomputer without large room mode summations at each response frequency when the source is very close to the measured field point. The theory (with computer) can predict the response at arbitrary positions in the room with one or multiple sources also at arbitrary positions in the room. Computer calculations show that some locations for the sources (using subwoofers as sources, for example) in listening rooms may be better than others for reducing, without electronic equalization, large response variations at listening positions.
