The New York State Theater at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City opened to the public on April 23, 1964. Designed by the architect, Philip Johnson, primarily as a music theater for the performance of ballet and operetta, it can also be adapted to the special requirements of musical comedy and drama by means of electro-acoustic reinforcement. Dr. V. L. Jordan, the acoustical consultant for the theater, developed the functional requirements and plans for the extensive sound system. The system, conceived as an integral element in the overall acoustic design, incorporates many of the concepts and features found in European concert hall installations of recent years.
