Azimuth errors in analog tape recording do not just mean rare and small drops in the frequency response at the very high end. Attention is drawn upon different impairments also related to azimuth errors. A summary of azimuth measurement methods will be given. Since most azimuth errors are related to the mechanical precision of compact cassette shells, the evaluation of the shell will be discussed. The presented method has been optimized for several years and gives reliable results. Evaluation takes the needs of the consumer into account. Also there will be comments concerning the design of the cassette deck and the molding process of the shell. Azimuth is still one of the main problems inherent in the compact cassette system, though remarkable improvements have been made in the last four years.
