For many years, dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) techniques have been used for telephone dialing and for low-volume data communication. Receiver designs for these applications are generally adequate if conventional telephone instruments are used for input. However, when the signals are acoustically coupled to the telephone, standard receiver performance is inadequate. The special problems of receiving acoustically coupled DTMF signals are examined, and the characteristics that receivers must have to detect such signals accurately and reliably are discussed.
