Measurements on Low Bit-Rate Coders

Methods of objectively measuring the performance of low bit-rate coders will be demonstrated. The measurements use signals which simulate the steady state characteristics of program material. By studying the effects of the ears masking characteristics on the resulting data, an estimate of the error audibility may be obtained. The results of measurements on a commercially available coder will be used to illustrate the technique.
