The development of advanced low bit-rate digital audio compression algorithms has led to audio processing methods which exploit the psychophysical sensitivities of human hearing. Systematic test and measurement methods are required in order to establish physical performance measures of psychophysically-based low bit-rate coders. New measurement techniques can incorporate a psychophysical model in the measurement process. Two measurements have been performed on a new audio coding algorithm which utilizes a tree structured signal decomposition. The worst case signal-to-mask ratio and the bit-rate demand histogram are two useful performance methods for psychophysically-based digital audio coding systems.
