This paper finds that the perception of Room Impre;ssion RI (or Spatial Impression SI) correlates closely with easily measured chaotic fluctuations in the relative pressure amplitude or the relative phase relationships at the two ears. These fluctuations arise from interference between direct and reflected sounds, and depend in a complex way on the nature of the sound source and the room acoustics. The dependence on level and angle of these fluctuations is described, and a physical measure of room acoustics based on these fluctuations-binaural profiles-is proposed.
