Wide Band and Wide Dynamic Range Recording and Reproduction of Digital Audio

Possibility of widening band width and dynamic range of a recording and reproduction system maintaining compatibility with CD or DAT is investigated by computer simulation. A wide band signal which is A/D converted by the sampling frequency of 2 times higher than that of CD or DAT with 16 or more bits is split into two subbands. The higherr band signal is coded by ADPCD and embedded in the least significant bit of 16 bit data. The lower band signal which is coded by 15 bit noise shaping quantization with subtractive dither has the effective dynamic range wider than that of CD or DAT. The method to generate good subtractive dither is studied.
