The availability of economical, high-quality digital audio bit-rate reduction techniques over the past few years is causing the industries that have traditionally used analog signals to convert to all-digital technologies. Also, new product classes are being developed that take advantage of the lower data burden realized through these techniques, particularly in applications centered around computers. Applications in the areas of broadcast, storage, and consumer delivery formats are presented. The challenges that the various industries face as they choose from a number of incompatible systems are discussed.
