A single-chip DSP implementation of the Dolby ProLogic surround decoding algorithm is described. The algorithm is a variable matrix decoder which achieves improved localization over passive decoders by steering dominant audio information to its proper spatial location. Real-time performance is achieved through a number of simplifying algorithm rearrangements and through the use of a 24-bit DSP chip.
