A System for the Reproduction Technique for Playback of Binaural Recordings

Binaural playback systems for auralization using headphones or a two loudspeaker arrangement with crosstalk cancelling techniques are well documented. However, a new reproduction procedure for binaural recordings using four loudspeakers was first discussed by Genuit, et al. Experiments have shown that this procedure provides approximately comparable results when using headphones with respect to directional and distance hearing. In further investigations, the playback environment under different conditions is being examined using a binaural room-acoustic analysis system. This paper discusses the possibilities and limitations of this reproduction procedure in terms of both room acoustics and psychoacoustics.
