A worldwide standard for a universal multichannel sound system with or without accompanying picture, using three front channels and two surround channels, was made by several international standardization organizations. The so-called 3/2 reference reproduction arrangement with three front loudspeakers and two surround loudspeakers is ideally suited to the domestic listening conditions. It is not, however, so well suited to larger rooms and auditoria because the listening area is too small. Therefore, a special arrangement for multichannel sound reproduction in larger auditoria is described in order to preserve the desired listening events over the increased size of the audience. It is based on the working principles of the well-known delta-stereophony system. Such a system guarantees excellent listening conditions for multichannel sound reproduction in so-called viewing sites, for demonstrations of HDTV/EDTV programs, television theaters, cinema with surround-sound reproduction, and all other kinds of multimedia presentations to larger audiences.
