In the well-known algorithms for filter design, the structure of the filter is generally predetermined. An analytical approach exists for only a few structure types. An algorithm for systematical structure optimization is therefore desirable. The structure evolution algorithm proposed here is derived from evolution strategy and is capable of optimizing filter structures as well as the coefficients for given applications.
