Psychoacoustic Noise-Shaped Improvements in CD and Other Linear Digital Media

This paper surveys techniques of reducing quantization noise in linear digital media by up to a 4 bit psychoacoustic improvement. These methods use a combination of noise shaping, dither, and in the case of -autodither,- subtraction of dither. Perceptual problems due to the nonlinearity of the auditory system in the perithreshold region are discussed, along with recent developments and the practical operational consequences of such optimized compatible perceptual coding schemes for linear digital media such as CD.
