The possibility of generating realistic synthetic auralizations of simulated sound fields in ordinary (echoic) rooms depends on the effective masking of the listening room acoustical characteristics by the reconstructed sound field. This paper examines the influence of listening room and loudspeaker characteristics and interactions on sound field reconstruction using a coupled-room acoustical simulator which allows user control over such parameters as listening room geometry and reflection coefficients, listener position, and loudspeaker number, position, orientation, and directivity.
