Auralization has been a notable recent development in acoustical CAD. However, the computational demands of exact physical auralization have not, to date, allowed anything like interactive design. Only by focusing on psychoacoustic rather than physical aspects of sound fields can real-time auralization be made feasible. This paper outlines an architectural acoustics design tool which facilitates interactive acoustical design using a real-time synthetic auralization system derived from the psychoacoustic studies of Y. Ando. The system seeks to generate a valid acoustical impression from simulated room responses using real-time, 2-channel, Surround-Sound, DSP techniques. Room data may be entered using provided schematic capture/editor functions and/or through modification of imported AUTOCAD.DXF files. An aesthetic suitability figure-of-merit measure in the form of Ando`s Total Listener Preference Index (S) can also be generated for the assessment of the acoustical performance at any listener location.
