The author gives results of an extensive research effort on the longevity and ruggedness of Compact Discs. Compact Discs included in the tests include the Century Disc made by Digipress, polycarbonate discs, and recordable discs. Subsequently the author tries to analyze the results and shows what the major pitfalls are in testing for longevity and how inferring a life expectancy from these tests is extremely difficult and controversial.
