Generalized Transaural Stereo

The authors extend and generalize their earlier work (JAES, Jan./Feb. 1989) on transaural stereo to include N signals presented over M loudspeakers (or transmitted through M channels) to L/2 listeners. An algebraic formulation and optimization techniques are used to derive a general solution to the transaural equations. By selecting various values for N, M, and L, this formulation leads to several innovative applications thought to be useful in a number of areas. Transaural monopole-dipole loudspeaker arrays are also examined.
