The Binaural Audio Processor is used primarily to present a stereo (or multichannel) signal in a binaural form appropriate for reproduction through headphones. The lecture starts with early approaches such as dummy head and other stereo and binaural recording techniques and examines a potential solution using a binaural signal processor as part of the end user`s reproduction system. In this context, the vast differences between the transfer functions of individuals, which experience shows to play a decisive role in the creation of a three-dimensional impression in headphone listening, are mentioned. The determination of these transfer functions is described. The influence of the headphone technology itself as well as the capability of the processor system of using the virtual sound source method to simulate the reflections of a given room are also taken into account. The lecture ends with an overview of current and future applications of binaural signal processing techniques.
