General Instrument Corp. has developed a system which is being marketed worldwide for the transmission and control of interruption-free digital audio to homes and businesses. Signal distribution is via satellite, cable system, MMDS, or broadcast transmission. The system uses Dolby adaptive delta modulation (ADM) audio coding and TDM OKQPSK and SCPC DQPSK modulation for transmission. By using digital signal processing techniques, direct digital audio connection via the AES/EBU interface is possible between Dolby ADM and linear PCM equipment such as digital audio tape machines and compact disk changers. Both Dolby ADM encoding and decoding are under development using DSP. Reduced size and cost as well as improved audio specifications will result from the DSP translation to and from PCM. This paper will present an overview of the full audio playback and transmission system architecture and then detail the significant techniques used in the DSP translations and the resulting performance improvements.
