The NICAM digital audio coding system used for television stereo transmissions, employs bit-rate reduction based on engineering principles. If perceptual masking is applied to the digital bitstream, a large potential space for buried digital data is exposed. This paper describes the peculiarities of the NICAM signal which makes it ideal for carriage of such data, as well as test results and possible television applications for the system.
