An optical fibre follows the groove. Its end point is subject to a horizontal displacement due to the groove modulation and a vertical displacement due to the surface imperfections. The basis cutting of the end point of the fibre allows a total reflection of the radiation at the fibre-air junction. The reflected radiation is transmitted by lens horizontal displacement. The Y signal is used to regulate the height of the head with respect to the record. The system plays the records as if they were new because the signal is picked up in a normally unused portion of the groove. It is possible in most circumstances to read damaged and broken records. The system works for discs as well as cylinders.
