Application of Binaural Hearing to Scale-Model Testing

A PC-based measuring system for acoustic scale-model testing is presented and the advantages and limitations of binaural hearing are discussed through the authors` experience in the acoustic design of auditoriums. The audition check of detrimental echoes by binaural reproduction of the impulse response is one of the main features of the test. A presentation of synthesized music and speech, which was obtained by the convolution of the impulse response and a dry source, has been found to be of insufficient fidelity to estimate the acoustics of an auditorium.
