Audio analysis for performance tests of professional audio equipment traditionally uses swept sine signals for the measurement of frequency response, distortion and other relevant audio parameters. This approach provides standardized results which may directly be used for comparison of different equipment. However, this method mainly suffers under the amount of time required to perform a complete proof of performance, especially in environments where dozens of channels and signal paths are available e.g. in studio environments. Therefore, compromises on the detail of the tests are often necessary. Furthermore, it will be shown that as soon as data reducing systems are involved, the classical approach is almost insufficient. The multitone approach, introducing a plurality of sinusoidal signal into the system and greatly reducing test time, shall be presented and its feasibility discussed.
