At the end of 1994 the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) issued the final draft of the DAB specification, and the European voting process resulted in a unanimous acceptance of the EUREKA 147 DAB system. There are a lot of reasons to believe that this new digital audio broadcasting system becomes reality. Indications for that are given by various activities throughout Europe and even Canada to start very soon new DAB services with both audio and data broadcasting on a pre-operational or already operational basis. This paper provides information about the current situation of starting DAB in Germany, in particular about the field trials and pilot projects in Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg, Berlin, Brandenburg, Hessen, Lower Saxony, North-Rhine Westphalia, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
