Optomechanical Method of Edison Cylinders Sound Reproduction

The paper describes a new method of sound reproduction from Edison cylinders using a laser interferometer. The cylinder is read by an ellipse-shaped stylus rigidly linked to an optical element of the interferometer at a reduced (20-30 times) rotation speed. This way the dynamic load of the stylus and the wear of the cylinder surface are appreciably reduced. The signal from the interferometer is processed and converted to audio by a PC sound system. The method improves sensibly the sound quality of the reproduction, while preserving the cylinders.
