Spectral stereo theory, developed by Cooper and Bauck, uses a spherical head model to determine the relationship between standard stereo loudspeaker signals and three-dimensional localization. Although this theory has been successfully implemented in practice, very little research has gone into testing the validity of this spherical model. Only Rasmussen and Juhl have suggested an alteration, stating that the radius of the original head model was overestimated by 38%. The present work compares both the original and the newer head models with real-head data. A new spectral stereo head model is then designed and implemented using conclusions from these comparisons.
