Spatial Sound-Field Reproduction by Wave-Field Synthesis

The wave-field synthesis method is used for a natural reproduction of sound in living rooms, cinemas, and theaters. Wave-field synthesis gives a much larger listening area with correct virtual directions and spatial impression than can be obtained with conventional reproduction methods. Starting with a summary of the theory for an infinitely long linear array of reproduction loudspeakers, simulations show the effects of finite array length and distance between the loudspeakers. A strategy is presented for practical realization of this new system by making use of the notional source concept, including compatibility with two-channel stereophony.
