During the last few years, low bit-rate coding of high-quality digital audio signals has spread to a large range of applications. Such lossy audio coding schemes should not be used in studio applications. Lossless audio coding provides the opportunity to preserve as much as possible of the precious audio material. At the AES 103rd Convention, the authors presented the first results of a new coding scheme that combined the advantages of low bit-rate audio coding and lossless compression. This paper describes the improvements of the coding scheme, including a different quantization characteristic, and improved strategies for quantization control and bitstream representation which led to a distinct improvement in compression.
