In practice it is often not possible to place the rear speakers for surround sound reproduction at preferred positions. As a consequence it is impossible to obtain a correct surround impression. Besides that, the sweet-spot for optimal listening is only small, even when a correct loudspeaker positioning can be realized. These problems are solved with Wave Field Synthesis, by synthesizing virtual surround speakers with arrays of loudspeakers at the backside of the listening room.
