The correct level alignment of multichannel reproduction systems is critical to the quality of reproduction. This has been studied in a large experiment and this-the first paper-reviews previous work in the area, examines the subjective task-are subjects using loudness for the calibration. Arguments for choice and the generation of nine test signals are discussed.
