Previous studies of noise-exposure and hearing loss have focused almost entirely on live-performance musicians and their audiences. To date, there have been no empirical studies of noise exposure among music-recording engineers. In the present study, we documented daily peak, maximum, and mean sound pressure levels and calculated via Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Defense (DOD) criteria. Depending upon the criterion applied, results suggest recording engineers may (or may not) be at risk of hearing loss due to over-exposure from excessive sound levels.
