Audio-frequency recording over the band between 30 and 15,000 cps is considered for recording systems in which the highest frequencies are recorded on the tape at densities of 5000 or more wavelengths per inch. Scanning losses, separation losses and azimuth losses are discussed briefly as factors limiting the resolution. Examples of high-resolution heads are shown, and performance data of conventional recording system are given for tape speeds of 1 ips and 1 7/8 ips. Recording systems in which the audio-frequency band is divided into low- and high-frequency regions, which are recorded separately, are described, and performance data for such systems are given for 1 ips and 1 7/8 ips tape speeds.
