Technical advances in modern warfare have brought an increasing demand for audio-visual training under simulated battle conditions to provide a realistic environment for the trainee in the areas of sonar and electronic countermeasures, for example. To meet this demand, assignments delegated to the Audio Applications Laboratory of the Naval Training Device Center at Orlando, Florida have required that recordings be made in the field. Often the conditions have been less than ideal. Later, when the results, in these instances, were analyzed, they sometimes proved unsatisfactory and the effort had to be duplicated. This was one factor which emphasized the need for a mobile laboratory with complete recording facilities. Another factor was the increasing workload of the main laboratory-a workload which included special assignments which had to be completed within a short interval of time and which required 100% utilization of the main laboratory`s equipment. Thus, for field recordings and for use as an annex to the main laboratory, the mobile laboratory emerged as a logical solution.
