Often an instrument designed for primary application in one field finds considerable usage in others. Fairchild/ElectroMetrics Interference Analyzer EMC-10, intended for measurement of interferences to military RFI/EMC specifications, today finds considerable usage as an audio wave analyzer. Covering the 20 Hz to 50 kHz frequency range, it provides sensitivity in the nanovolt region, distortion products of less than .01%, a wide range of detector functions and outputs, 40 DB linear range on its front panel meter, electronic scanning and battery operation. The diversity of functions would alone make it unique but the circuitry utilized makes it even more so. Many of the techniques utilized may find merit in other applications. It is the purpose of this paper to describe this circuitry and the design philosophy behind it.
